Artful Techniques

Whether wheel-thrown or hand-built, our expert artisans shape ceramics to optimise their resilience and longevity.

Decoration

We aim to unleash ceramic creativity in all our pieces. We elevate the beauty of our ceramics with a plethora of decorating techniques, infusing each piece with personality and artistry.
Discover our signature methods:

  1. Painting: We embellish ceramics with vibrant glazes and underglazes, using brushes, sponges, or airbrushes.
  2. Stamping: Custom or pre-made stamps imprint intricate designs and repeating patterns.
  3. Carving: Our artisans carve ceramics to reveal texture and depth, adding dimensions to each creation.
  4. Decals: We transfer pre-made designs for elaborate patterns, which would otherwise be be challenging to produce by hand.
  5. Slip Trailing: Using nozzles or brushes, we apply liquid clay mixtures to create raised designs.
  6. Sgraffito: We scratch designs into glazed ceramics, contrasting and texturing the surface.
  7. Lustre: Applying metallic glazes over base layers, we create shiny, reflective surfaces.

Shrinking of Clay

Indulge in our passion for crafting exquisite ceramics as we guide you through the fascinating transformation of clay. Our commitment to quality shines through in every piece we create, ensuring you receive only the finest products.

  1. Clay’s Watery Beginnings: Wet clay holds a high water content, which evaporates during firing, causing shrinkage. Shrinkage depends on both the clay type and firing temperature.
  2. Bisque Firing: At 1652-1832°F (900-1000°C), the clay dries and contracts in the “greenware firing” phase, as moisture evaporates.
  3. Maturing Stage: Ranging from 2012-2282°F (1100-1250°C), clay particles fuse together, causing further shrinkage as they pack tightly.
  4. Vitrification: Finally, clay becomes hard and dense at 2282-2462°F (1250-1350°C), reaching maximum shrinkage.

Shrinkage varies from 5-20%, influencing the final size and shape of each piece. Born Free’s artisans masterfully consider these factors, delivering ceramics that embody passion and flair, ceramics that fit seamlessly to your scale.
